Well, this little Canadian tour has been a blast. I wish I had some crap things to blog about so that it would be relatively entertaining but I'm sure something shit will happen to me soon. The shit thing will probably be that my computer will get stolen or something and that'll mean that I can't say anything on this frikkin blog anyway....
Right now I'm in my old stompin grounds, hanging out with old friends and getting my mom to cook for me. It's pretty good here in Soul Harbour. I like the comedy scene here too. these comics aren't making much money but they've got great comraderie and are coming up with some great ideas. One of my favorite comics here is Peter White, who I met four or five years ago when I was last here working at Yuk Yuks. He's been doing a late night talk show at Jokers Comedy Club on a saturday night that was thoroughly entertaining. I was a guest this past saturday and in between our jokes a jibes at Cape Breton and compliments to New Zealand some guy in the audience started freakin out at us. I think he was from Cape Breton and really thought that New Zealand was made up from The Lord Of The Rings movies. We thought we were gonna have to throw down. ten comics versus one psycho, it probably woulda been close.
The funniest conversation that I've had while here was with Peter's side kick in his talk show; Dave Millett, who is also a stand up, and I were grabbing the bus from Halifax for the 30 minute journey back to Dartmouth and this is how it went;
Dave "So, what's it like being a world travelling superstar stand up comedian?"
then, without being able to answer I had to answer a call on his phone that was for me (because I don't have one here) and this is how the one sided conversation went;
JJ "yeah, oh hi Dad, is there any chance you can pick me up in behind Mic Mac Mall in 15 minutes, I'm on the bus."
Dave didn't ask me again after that |

Happy Canada Day to everyone out there. I don't know how much celebrating I'll be able to get in tonight considering I've got an early 3pm show tomorrow. Well, that's pretty early for me! Too early for dealing with the kind of hangover that I have today.....but I'll get to that in a second.
Show number one went really well last night. I'd say I was 98% happy with it. I didn't like the ending of my show because I tried to change it. I've had some changes in my personal life since my last run of this show which has lead to some club material that I thought would storm it at the end of my Fringe show but in retrospect that was a bad decision. It's weird how sometimes you really have to embrace that there is a difference between a theatrical show and Stand Up comedy. The lines are slightly blurred but there is still a difference...... Just don't close your one man show with mysogynistic jokes about tits is what I'm trying to say.
So, I'm staying at Kate Davis' house here in Toronto. Her and her husband Cleve have been incredible hosts. I feel like moving in with them full time but I don't think they need another teenager in the house!
I feel like I'm actually having trouble meeting people at the Toronto Fringe. I guess it's because I'm just a one man production, so naturally I'm a bit of a loner. Overall, there really wasn't much atmosphere cookin in the festival tent last night after my show, but I guess that'll get better as the days roll on. I decided to head over to somewhere that I'm naturally more comfortable - a comedy gig!! So, hung out at Jo-anna Downey's Comedy show at Spirits last night with a plethora of comics that I haven't seen in around 5 years. Pretty cool night, but I'm paying for it now.....
Actually, I'm not too bad, considering..... Time to jump in the shower now and head off to show number 2. Rock and roll!

Well, there seems to have been a slight screw up with my show times at The Toronto Fringe. Not really the setback that I needed going in to my first festival there. Here are the ammended times if you're thinking of going, and I'll try to update my gig list too. Oh yeah, and it's always adviseable to call the box office too on 416-966-1062. Also, the name of the show is THE JOKER.

Howdy all,
Well, the shows in Vancouver were great fun, and now I've caught the ferry over here to Victoria where I'll be doing 2 shows here at Heckler's Bar and Grill. I guess it's named hecklers because they want people to yell at the TVs during sporting events. At least I hope that's the case anyway!! I don't really need any heckling in the situation that I'm about to walk in to!
So, this is where I went to high school, and I haven't been back here since then. In fact, it's safe to say that I was 17 when I was last here and it's been about 17 years since I've been back. I'm expecting to see a lot of familiar faces (but not necessarily body types) at the gig tomorrow night so it should be really interesting! Thanks to the fad of facebook, I've been hearing from tons of old high school friends. Man oh man, I'll do my best not to disappoint, but this is going to be an interesting one!
I think that my old high school girlfriend might be coming out too. (yes, Julie, the following joke is directed at you x). Well, we never broke up, I just moved away.....So, I think I might have to break up with her at some point during my show. ha ha. That's right, I'll just dump her, right in front of her husband! |

Well, it was a long and busy month. I didn't even realise I hadn't been blogging or anything of the sort and before I even knew it, here I am on the other side of the world!
I just touched down in Vancouver last night so here I am on day one of my epic Canadian trip. I'm playing a club here called The Comedy Mix for the weekend and I'm off to Victoria (where I went to High School) for some shows next week. It should be great fun. All these shows are a bit of a warm up as I'm on my way to Toronto to play the Toronto Fringe starting on June 30th. I'm starting to get nervous that I've really under prepared on the advertising side of things for the Fringe, but I've never played it before so there's no real way of telling what I'm walking in to. If you are in the Toronto area tho, please come on down and check my show out. The tickets are only $11 so it's a steal!
I'm staying at my friend Toby Hargrave's place here while I'm in Vancouver. He's a fellow clown and a really good laugh. I met him many years ago when we were both shooting our Comedy Now specials in Toronto. Last night he picked me up at the airport and received a phone call in his car on the way home and before you know it, the two of us are in a little club doing short guest spots. there ya have it, I'd been in the country less than 2 hours and had already found a way to sneak on stage. I've got a great new joke about paranoid boobs out of it too!
Well, tonights the start over at the Mix. So, I'll do my best to jump on here after and let y'all know how it went...
catch ya soon
